Film Discussion Series : Sci-Fi on the B-List

B-List But Influential...
Join us in early fall/early winter for a trip down memory lane as we view and discuss three classic B-list sci-fi movies and their influence on more familiar, contemporary films.

Selected films are shown in their entirety; library staff member Phil Carr moderates the discussions.  Attend if you can. No registration is required.

Tuesday, October 18, 6:30 p.m.
Set in the early years of the Atomic Age and the Cold War, 1954's Them! hit the big screen shortly after experiments were conducted at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. Watch our heroes battle irradiated monster ants and explore both the nuance and suspense of this low-budget thriller.

Tuesday, November 15, 6:30 p.m.
The Time Machine was released in 1960 and is based on same-name classic novel by H.G. Wells. This one is arguably the best film adaptation of Wells's time travel book, which is an annual favorite on high school summer reading lists. The film also won an Oscar for visual effects, well before the days of CGI.

Tuesday, December 20, 6:30 p.m.
We're back to 1956 with a showing of Forbidden Planet, a film with a better than 'B' movie cast.  The story borrows from the plot line of Shakespeare's Tempest and also features sci-fi icon Robby the Robot. Any fan of Lost in Space, Star Trek, or certain Twilight Zone episodes, among others, will recognize this film's influence. Join the discussion...
